Welcome

Welcome to the web site of the Effective Written Communication training course led by Rob Oliver in The Hague.

This course is for staff members in international organisations who wish to improve the quality and effectiveness of their written communication in English in professional settings. The course focuses on shorter forms of writing such as emails, memos, briefings and proposals which are commonly used in the international workplace.

During the course we explore the factors which lead to clear, effective and reader-friendly writing, focusing on some of the key skills in written communication:
* planning, organising and revising texts for maximum clarity and impact
* anticipating the needs of readers
* using concise, effective and appropriate written English
* understanding the dynamics of different writing situations

You will be invited to draft a series of short texts for various purposes and to reflect on the factors which help or hinder communication at work.

Some of the key questions of workplace writing addressed on the course are:
*How can we reduce the length of memos and emails by presenting information concisely?
*How can we make written requests effectively?
*How can we motivate and interest readers?
*When do we need to be especially tactful in written communication, especially when writing in the multi-cultural workplace?

Writing - a Lifelong Activity

It is impossible to cover the whole subject of writing in a short course. You never stop learning to write better. However, the course should give you ideas and resources to help you improve immediately and to get you thinking about the key issues in written communication in the workplace. I hope you find the course enjoyable and useful.
